Before I get into the review, I wanted to share that Common Ground has dedicated times for men, women, transgender and genderqueer people, and BIPoC. If you feel like an overnight stay at a charming Bed & Breakfast might be just the ticket to de-stress, you’ll want to check out this charming, rural grain bin B&B. The skin detox starts in the steam room with a sudsy black soap application to open pores and prep your skin. Of course I opted for the therapeutic bath because even though I had no idea what it was, I knew I wanted one.
The experience.
The retreat studio at Blooming Moon Spa is the closest you are going to get to Tub and Tan these days, while, somehow, also being very, very far away from Tub and Tan. Essentially, you are renting out a hot tub and a cute little room with a steam shower in the back of Blooming Moon Spa. Inside, people are getting massages and manicures and outside, you are alone in your own brightly lit (on a sunny day) space. Several stories up in the imposing Yard building on the east side of the Burnside Bridge, Knot Springs is aiming to be the total package.
Going to a Bathhouse for the First Time
It's a scatterplot of dressing rooms with netted ceilings that allow you to peer in from the tops of curvy landings. The glass doors of the steam room and the silver shower faucets dotting the walls make for funhouse mirrors. Finally, end with warm Moroccan mint tea (or water, wine, or beer), relax, and socialize in the lounge area. You get to select the essential oils to use in your tub and I went with the staff recommended clary sage and bergamot. The scent wasn't overwhelming by any means and the sweet birch magnesium flakes made the tub amazingly comforting and relaxing. Root is a total experience kind of place.
Broke & Quarantined: 7 Ways to Make $1,000 More a Month (NO Driving!) Personal...
There used to be no option to make a reservation. You just had to show up and wait your turn. Now, you sign up for a time online and just walk in and drop your phone and ID at the desk, then to the lockers. The layout has also changed for the better.
Hours
After your sauna, you can enjoy a massage or other spa treatments, or simply relax in the lounge area with a cup of tea. If you’re looking for a unique and relaxing experience in Portland, Oregon, look no further than the Russian bath house. This traditional Russian spa offers a variety of services, including steam rooms, saunas, and massage therapy. In this guide, we’ll explore the history of the Russian bath house, what to expect during your visit, and tips for making the most of your experience. Located in the heart of Portland, Banya 5 offers a variety of saunas and steam rooms, as well as a cold plunge pool and a relaxation area with tea and snacks.
Apparently, infusing shower water with Vitamin C keeps your skin softer? There are a variety of claims being made at SweatHouz, like those about how colored lights in the sauna impact your health, that I can’t vouch for and don’t have the time to get into. But just know you can change the color of the light in your sauna. When I say fancy, I mean the post-sauna options include Lardo, Grassa and Oven and Shaker, plus there’s a botox place next door and a nice nail salon across the parking lot. You could easily make a day out of parking your car here and self-caring like the wife of a Trail Blazer (though I bet they all have their own personal infrared saunas at home).
TURKISH STEAM ROOM
Maybe it’s the twinkling stars above the bubbling hot tub, or the tiled steam room. Or maybe it’s the wine glasses (plastic) for water poolside or the gold foil on the chocolates. Maybe it’s the fact that the spa services here are not based in vibes and essential oils like you might find on the east side of the river. Here they are medical aesthetics.
I say to bring multiple towels, because you’re jumping in and out of various water sources, and it’s nice to have a totally dry towel to use when you’re all done. I’d bring 2 with you while you’re taking the waters, and leave 2 in your locker. From there, Suma and I went to the pool.

Now, I would just say go somewhere else, anywhere else, if you think kids jumping and splashing will harsh your vibe. We then showered off with the special soaps offered by Common Ground. Y’all, I was pretty nervous to be around nude people (woo conservative upbringing!!), but it was totally fine. People were walking around, and it was chill. No one raised their eyebrows at my body.

I tried the rosemary-mint scrub and very much enjoyed the tingle and the smell. Plus I got enough to scrub myself twice. By the time I left Löyly, I felt like I’d been melted down and reconstituted as a saner, cleaner version of myself. You have to wear a swimsuit during the mixed gender hours so, if you aren’t super keen on two hours in a damp swimsuit, single-gender hours are probably your best bet. Unfortunately, Löyly doesn’t offer trans/genderqueer hours like Everett House and Common Ground.
It may have only been 90 minutes, but it felt like we’d entered a different, much-fancier world. I suggest coming during school hours and hoping no 16-year-olds get their parents to bring them (I have no evidence that teenagers ever come here). Bring a book and a water bottle and switch between the pool and sauna, taking an outdoor shower in between. One thing of note about Common Ground is that children are allowed, with a guardian. I would definitely not bring my three-year-old here, because it’s a very quiet relaxing spot and those are words that don’t describe an awake three-year-old.
It was cold and I am a baby, so I could barely get myself to dunk in to my waist for one second. But it felt good after I got out. This is a franchise, and they have the process dialed in. You check in and are given a cold, essential oil-scented wash cloth and directed to your sauna room. Each room has towels and a shower, where the water is infused with Vitamin C. Looking back, I continue to debate the online hookup apps that many people, especially non-millennials, seem offended by.
Cold water plunging is an important part of hydrotherapy, greatly benefiting the circulatory system. We are part of a global community that provides a unique blend of hydrotherapy, body treatments and old world wellness rituals- all in a clean, safe and friendly environment. Everything is provided here, including tea, almonds and water with fruit in it plus some cans of plain sparkling water in the fridge, and the staff is very friendly.
